Jack of All Trade
Sometimes, we have to take a pause , and ask ourselves whether to be a Jack of all trade or to be a specialist in our studies, career or our outlook of life . Indeed, most of us have an objective in what we want in life. But as we advance in age, we drift with the motion of reality, the way of Tao and our objectives seem to disappear with advancing age.
Remember, when we were toddlers, our parents would proudly say, " Surelah, we want our kids to be doctors.."
Then after the primary school, after our "best efforts", parents felt a bit disappointed, then say, " aiyoooh cannot be doctor, nevermind, can still be engineer.."
Then after the secondary school, parents are faced with reality, " aiyoooh,...cannot be engineer , never mind... be a teacher also can..."
But with more disappoinments, the parents say, ".. aiyoooh.. cannot be teacher, go and be mechanic...but don't be a drug addict, robber or snatch-thief ( it seems this is the highest risk but best paid job)...."
Disappointments after disappointments are faced by parents, yet they still support and offer encouragements to their kids, who have to face so many obstacles in life. So many dreams and hopes of the children are shattered. Some become a social menance, some end behind bars. The stronger ones rehabilitate and return to society with sucess..... as the saying sound, "Life must go on..."
Yet, we are sad to see that many parents are "kiasu", pushing very hard to see that their kids must be "specialists" not a Jack of all trade. Must be a medical specialist, must be a specialist engineer, must be a specialist lawyer, specialist manager, specialist accountant. "Kid you are nothing being a GP, a lawyer, an engineer... see right neighbour ...specialist in ABC Medical Centre, one time operation done 30K, that left neighbour only a GP taking 3-4K a month....or opposite right neighbour "dadah criminal" specialist lawver...one case can be up to 50K ( and free dadah pusher back to the street).. and that left opposite lawyer...only buruk himself through the way ... a couple of hundred ringgit case also want to sapu..." See, why now everyone wants to specialize?
Jack may be able handle any possible obstacles. That's why the company likes Jack or " one-leg-kick" ' ..anything also can do and just reward them with peanut pay. Ask a Jack, he will run errands well, whether he likes or not; he will stay back for overtime and just phone back "darling spouse , got to do overtime.... you take the kids for dinner...."; he will backstab his collegues, saying so and so damn lazy , bitchy, never do work ....and many more.." That's why boss likes Jack. Jack will also be the first to be kicked out if the company wants to restructure to reduce cost..
Specialists are in for a better life. They are better paid. They can afford what many can't. Just see..how can a company sack a very creative accountant...How can a company not required a tax-specialist who can result a company paying less tax...how can a company sack a brand-specialist..? So that's why it still pays to be a specialist now.
But, kids nowadays sense the wish of the parents early. That's why they begin to specializel early...in the latest high tech gadgets where parents even don't know the names. The kids play up-to-date computer games so that parents cannnot beat them. They wear specialists' designed clothings after all paid by parents. They carry the latest fashioned bags, wear the "Jimmy Choo" specialized shoes and thongs in hope that the parents are seen to be modern. The kids believe in , " if you can't beat them, join the crowd."
So now ..what say you. " Still want to be a JACK??"
I better go off and listen to this song now, " Que sera sera..whatever will be , will be....."
